The Inside Scoop of Wedding Trends in 2023

We’re dreaming of summer weddings with warm weather, and the gentle kiss of sun on our faces. So what are the summer wedding trends in 2023?

Here at The Commons, we’ve compiled a list of what we’re excited to see in the summer of 2023 in Calgary. From wedding dresses and bridesmaid dresses to décor trends, food and wine.

Wedding dresses from all the eras

2023 summer wedding dress trends will see 90’s minimalism silhouettes, 80’s full skirts and billowing sleeves (softer than the actual 80’s) and 70’s inspired halter neck dresses. Soft colours like white are still in, but we’re expecting more pastels, peach, ballet slipper pink, antique gold and metallic. Embroidery, lace and beads will form part of veils, dresses or even capes.

mismatched Bridesmaid dresses

Bridesmaid dresses won’t always be ‘matchy-matchy’, we’re expecting mismatched dresses this summer in Calgary. Embrace the versatility of this aesthetic and tap into a variety of bright colours, varying colours from the same colour family or utilise the same colour with different styles.

Brighter, moodier and more unique colours

Thanks to Viva Magenta taking out the Pantone Colour of the Year, summer weddings in 2023 will see brighter, moodier and more unique colours. Here are some colour combinations we’re already seeing.

  • Sage green and blush - for elegance and sophistication. Touches of rose gold and cream create a romantic look.

  • Light blue and green - for an airy, fresh look and relaxing setting.

  • Lavender and grey - for a traditional look. Grey brings a cool, calm and elegant feeling to the space.

  • Neutral green and mauve - for a clean but eye-catching look that allows for the use of plants, ivy, vines. Mauve creates a pop of colour amongst the green.

Hobbies and interests form part of the wedding décor in 2023

Expect to see more of the couple's hobbies and interests on display in the décor. Wedding toppers with matching hiking boots, a playbill or short story for a program or fun facts of the couple printed on napkins add a personal touch and make the event unique. For entertainers expect a favourite coffee table book turned into a guest book or for the gardeners and eco enthusiasts, flower seeds as wedding favours.

2023 will see statement pieces and creative lighting for the décor

Lots of weddings will include statement aisles and arches that create a wow moment from the beginning. Aisles, arches and backdrops are full of foliage and colour and made to fit the space. Neon signs will add warmth and light to an event, with the couple's married name or a favourite love quote lit up. The Commons Calgary provides versatile and adaptable spaces perfect for introducing personalities.

Eco-Friendly events will continue into 2023

This summer we expect more than the removal of single-use plastics with couples researching and investing in further sustainable options. There will be more pot plants over flowers and digital, recycled or plantable invitations over paper invitations. Couples are conscious about using locally sourced food and providing eco-friendly party favours.

Weekday OR brunch Weddings

This summer, we are anticipating more weddings on weekdays rather than the weekend. Some couples are even considering a brunch or lunch wedding over a dinner occasion. Weekday weddings provide the perfect opportunity for guests to keep their weekends free or take advantage of a longer weekend of celebration.

Intimate wedding ceremonies

Weddings are returning to the sizes we saw pre-pandemic, however there’s still a want for small and intimate weddings. We predict more immersive weddings with guest lists small and consisting of just a few friends and family members.

Summer wedding menus have been upgraded

Wedding menus will be all part of the experience for the couple and the guests. We're seeing a play on nostalgia with fine dining and full-course menus based on comfort food and the couple’s favourite meals.

Cocktails, anyone?  We're seeing couples create cocktails inspired by them or even offer tasting menus. Instead of a sit down meal, couples are seeking a more relaxed atmosphere with multiple cocktail bars, lounges, high tables and canapes served.

Cakes are still in, but it’s all about flavour

In 2023, we expect to see more buttercream painted cakes ranging from simple painted designs to more intricate designs. Some cakes will feature like a piece of art and resemble oil paintings with beautiful floral images. Bright vintage wedding cakes with multiple rows of intricate pearled details are also trending.

Candid moments and film are the way to go

Photography for the summer of 2023 is all about raw emotion. There’s still disposable and polaroid cameras being offered to guests to catch these special moments. Photographers are expecting less staged images, minimal posing and more natural poses. We’re excited to see more of what has been termed 'love drunk' photos, where the image is a blur of love.

Summer wedding season is just around the corner, and we can’t wait. Take note of the 2023 summer trends, but also remember that trends come and go.
